The Latin American name and identity (April 2025)

Image
The name is part of the identity. Logicians knew it, taxonomists know it, and writers experience it daily. What doesn't have a name is as if it didn't have existence. In many ways, naming is creating. The lack of a unique, defined, and satisfactory name is not unrelated to the old problem of the identity of what we call Hispanic America      In the early days of the "discovery," the New Continent was called "the Indies." For greater precision, but no less ambiguity, "the West Indies." Later it was known that it wasn't Asia, but the inhabitants continued to be referred to by the improper name of Indians.      Each region of the American geography received its own name from the beginning. Bolívar, in turn, convened the Congress of Panama in 1826, with the aim of creating an association of American states. This vision of integration also gave rise to the creation of the Inter-Americ...

From the Chaplain: Latin America - It wasn't «America» nor is it only «Latin»? (April 2025)

Image
Once and for all, we should understand each other and make ourselves understood when we talk about «America Latin America».       It wasn't America -we already know that- nor is it only or primarily «Latin».       But this name is already widely recognized.       Until a better name gains traction, as some dream,  « Latin America »  encompasses all of Our America, the Greater Homeland, our Continent, and its islands.       Moreover, it's essential to clarify that  « America »  doesn't mean  «t hat part of America that is the United States of North America »  exclusively, and that people of the United States are not  « the Americans" but rather  « US Americans »  or  « people from the United States » ,  just one group of Americans among many .
